"Gerede Research and Folk Culture Symposium" organized by Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University (BAİBÜ) was successfully held in Gerede between 3-5 November 2023. The symposium was attended by academicians and researchers from various universities of Turkey.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hanifi Üzüm and Research Assistant Koray Gökmen from BAİBÜ Faculty of Sports Sciences, "Historical Process and Gains of Gerede Traditional Rahvan Horse Races", Assistant Professor Tuğba Kocaağa "Gerede in Winter Sports" and Research Assistant Semih Karaman "Traditional Sportive Motif of Turkish Culture: Oil Wrestling" participated in the symposium with their presentations. Four academicians were appreciated by the participants in their studies and presentations on "Traditional Sports in Gerede".
In the papers, the history, development and current situation of traditionally practiced sports in Gerede were discussed. In the declaration, suggestions were also presented on what needs to be done for the protection and survival of traditional sports in Gerede.
The suggestions in the declaration are as follows:
Cooperation with local governments and non-governmental organizations for the promotion and dissemination of traditional sports.
Inclusion of traditional sports in education curricula.
Improvement and modernization of the areas where traditional sports are practiced.
Providing financial support for the sustainability of traditional sports.
